Cinema Misfits Podcast, Episode 17: Carleton Carpenter Interview, Toy Story 3, Jonah Hex, Knight and Day

The Islander is where guests are interviewed by Nancy and asked to pick the ten films they would take with them to a desert island. Nancy’s guest this week is actor Carleton Carpenter. Carleton has acted on TV, film, and the stage.

Toy Story 3. It’s Pixar! It’s in 3D! It’s dark and edgy! What’s not to like? Listen and find out.

Jonah Hex. It’s said that Jonah Hex can speak to the dead. Then maybe he should have himself a little talk with this movie and find out went wrong. Because one thing’s for sure–it died a horrible death at the box office.

Knight and Day. Is the bar so low for what’s considered entertaining that this mildly competent film can pass as one of the summer’s successes? While not a Jonah Hex level disaster, it certainly didn’t do the business that was expected of it. Still, the Misfits find themselves split as to its merits.

When writer/producer David Jacobs joined me recently on “The Islander,” he had a lot to say about some of the films he loves, including why he is fond of them and what makes them stand-out cinematic achievements.  In this bonus … Continue reading

Cinema Misfits Podcast, Episode 14: Interview With David Jacobs (Creator of Dallas), Harry Brown, What I learned at the Movies, and Robin Hood

The Islander is where guests are interviewed by Nancy and asked to pick the ten films they would take with them to a desert Island. Nancy’s guest this week is David Jacobs: producer, director, author, and creator of both Dallas and Knots Landing.

Harry Brown. What I want to know is, where’s the Harry Brown action figure? It could come with play money to drop everywhere in a drunken stupor, an asthma inhaler, and a cell phone that you can hear his old codger buddy being killed on. Depressing drug den and graffiti covered, urine stained pedestrian underpass sold separately.

It’s back to school for some show and tell as the Misfits share some of the things they learned at the movies.

Robin Hood. Although there’s no robbing the rich and giving to the poor in this new version, when it’s over, your wallet will definitely be ten dollars or so lighter and you might very well feel like you’ve been robbed. Continue reading

Mark Lisanti, Marooned on “The Islander” (audio interview)

From it’s very inception, Defamer was a little bit of Brilliance. Lisanti worked anonymously at first, sort of as a joke, but it really didn’t matter. What did matter was the amazing quality of his posts, often as many as two dozen a day, which left the denizens of Hollywood gasping for air, and the underlings…the overworked personal assistants, underpaid production assistants, and yahoos like me…craving for more. Cinema Misfits Podcast, Episode 11: Interview with Vincent Arcaro, How to Train Your Dragon, and Clash of the Titans

6 ‘n 90. Da Man reviews six films in 90 seconds.

The Islander is where guests are interviewed by Nancy and asked to pick the ten films they would take with them to a desert island. Nancy’s guest this week is Vince Arcaro, founder, president, and executive producer of Dark Light Pictures.

After watching How to Train Your Dragon, it’s difficult not to ask yourself the question, “Are the only films that don’t insult an audience’s intelligence being made for kids?”

Clash of the Titans. The Misfits come to a unanimous decision: It stinks!

Cinema Misfits Podcast, Episode 9: Part 2 of James Karen interview, Shutter Island, Cop Out, and the Worst Movies to Win Best Picture

The Misfits take a final look back at the January and February movies. How did the big ego/small expectation, almost direct-to-video, and test screening flops do?

6 ‘n 90. Da Man reviews six films in ninety seconds.

The Islander Part 2. Nancy concludes her interview with character actor James Karen, who shares his final movie picks to take with him on a desert island.

Cop Out. It’s about two cops who spend most of the film not being cops. It’s a comedy without any comedy. And it’s a buddy picture without any buddies. What does that leave? Listen and find out.

The worst of the best. Just because a film receives the Best Picture Oscar, doesn’t mean it’s any good.

Cinema Misfits Podcast, Episode 8: Interview with James Karen, Reviews of Up, Percy Jackson and The Olympians, and The Wolfman

Up. Maybe we’re just a bunch of Johnny-come-latelies who missed the bandwagon, but even so, nothing is going to stop us from putting in our two cents about Up. It’s great! So there.

The Islander is where guests are interviewed by Nancy and asked to pick the ten films they would take with them to a desert island. Nancy’s guest this week is character actor James Karen. Among his many TV appearances are roles on Seinfeld and The Larry Sanders Show, and on the big screen he has appeared in Poltergeist, The Return of the Living Dead, Frankenstein Meets the Spacemonster, and many other films.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. What’s the point of being an Olympian if your kid can call you on the carpet for being busy with God stuff instead of being a good parent? The only thing that could possibly be lamer is taking an elevator to Olympus.

The new Wolfman movie is an uneasy mix of yesterday and today. Is it an effort doomed to leave gorehounds disappointed and fans of the original film frustrated?

Cinema Misfits Podcast, Episode 5: Interview With John Wilson (Creator of the Razzies ), The Golden Globe Awards, and Reviews of The Giant Claw and Duel in the Sun

6 ‘n 90. Da Man reviews six films in ninety seconds. And this time, it’s a festival of “outs”!

The Giant Claw. It’s a blur! It’s a bird! It’s a puppet!

The Islander. Guests are interviewed by Nancy and asked to pick the ten films they would take with them to a desert island. Nancy’s guest this week is John Wilson, creator of the Razzies, an award that celebrates the worst Hollywood has to offer. Will a Pia Zadora film be among the movies he would take with him?

Horror has many faces. For Lou, it’s the face of Sam Mendes. Daybreakers. Is a spoiler warning really necessary? A film so bad, it’s not possible to spoil it.

The Golden Globe Awards. Let’s hear it for the winners! And if you don’t feel like clapping for them, don’t worry. They’re more than ready to give themselves a round of applause and a standing O. Hey, they deserve it.

Duel in the Sun. Lionel Barrymore rides a horse! What else do you need to know? Continue reading
